Despite such attempts at a rapprochement, the field remains significantly divided not only about how to account for the origins of the Pentateuch, but also about the methods for doing so and what counts as evidence. Yet, to describe Pentateuchal criticism as in 'crisis' is to give only one side of the picture, for the last few decades have also been enormously fertile intellectually. New evidence has been admitted, new methodologies applied, new interpretations offered to familiar data, and new paradigms proposed.
