This book rejects that stereotype by showing the ways that Catholic women religious have reckoned with the contradictions of their religious vows and their feminist convictions. It is based on in-depth interviews conducted between 2008 and 2013 with 32 Catholic sisters and former sisters. As Catholic women religious who entered the Church as early as 1937 and as recently as 1985, they have had to navigate the tensions between serving feminist and social justice causes and maintaining their standing and belonging within their faith institution. The book recounts their experiences and opinions about a range of issues, from the criminalization of women’s ordination, to the abuse of children by priests, to issues of women’s reproductive justice, to the inclusion of LGBTQ people in Church communities, to their own resistance to state and church repression. What shape does resistance take among the Catholic women religious interviewed here and what does this realization help us understand about resistance, feminist and otherwise? Can answers to these questions inform contemporary studies of social movements and institutions in a time when the future of democratic governance and social progress is uncertain?
