He attended Hargrave Military Academy, graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in 1966, and served four years in the N.C. National Guard. Jones served five terms in the N.C. House of Representatives as a Democrat starting in 1982. In 1994 he ran as a Republican and won to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives representing the 3rd District, a position he held until his death on February 10, 2019.;
