| Abstract | This is the first major study of the music of Ferrucio Busoni (1866-1924). Of Italian parentage, Busoni was the most renowned virtuoso pianist of his time, a fact which has served to obscure his significance as a composer. In this book, conceived as a companion to Edward J. Dent's classic biography, the author reveals the hidden logic of Busoni's enigmatic creative achievement and examines the vital role he played in the evolution of twentieth-century music. This book is an introduction to Busoni's principal compositions, among which the Piano Concerto, the Fantasia Contrappuntistica, The Red Indian Fantasy, and the operas Arlecchino, Turandot, and Doktor Faust are probably the best known. The author discusses the considerable influence on Busoni's work of literature, art and architecture, and his book includes a complete list of Busoni's compositions and writings as well as accounts of his relations with such composers as Schoenberg. The author has researched extensively in Cambridge, Berlin, Zurich and elsewhere to assemble a large quantity of previously unpublished material. He has been living in Germany since 1973 and is a conductor at the Cologne Opera. |
