| Abstract | "This is an experiment in musical biography. It sets out to show how Richard Wagner's mind worked during the time he was writing that incomparable masterpiece, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg. It is biography rather than musical analysis, in the sense that it inquiries how the ideas came to the composer, how he was personally affected while they were incubating, and how he brought the ideas to the creative moment of success. The book draws largely on Wagner's own letters and writings, many of which have not before appeared in English, and deals equally with libretto (Wagner's own) and music. After the full account of the biographical history of the work, the author gives a detailed commentary which covers the entire score. A new idea for Wagner students and students of music is here set up. There are appendices of sources, a bibliography, and 5 illustrations."--Dust jacket. |
