| Abstract | "This is the first major study in English of the music of Berlioz, whose principal works--Symphonie Fantastique, The Trojans, Faust, Romeo and Juliet, Benvenuto Cellini, to name only a handful--place him securely among the grandest and most spectacularly imaginative of nineteenth-century composers. Mr Dickinson's systematic and comprehensive survey of Berlioz's music means that not only the great landmarks are scrutinized in patient and clarifying detail, but also the lesser monuments; and he discerns a more coherent pattern of development and consistency of style in Berlioz's ample yet unpredictable output than even the staunchest of the composer's admirers might think possible.
