| Abstract | This book is a brief overview of the development of Western music that will help students gain a clear understanding of the evolution of musical style. The authors organized this book to be used in a variety of ways. It can be used as a textbook in music history, along with collateral readings in the many authoritative, specialized studies that are readily available to students. In this manner it will serve as a practical source from which students can expand their studies to include the vast amount of material that has been edited and published in recent years. This book is also designed to be used as a source for the review of music history. Its format is based on a consistent outline among the chapters. Students can utilize its plan and material to focus attention on the most important musical developments and forms. The present edition will prove valuable to students who wish to embark on a study of the literature and history of music without the guidance of an instructor. Its information on scores, recordings, and collateral readings can be a guide to further reading and to a selected list of musical examples that will serve as a basis for understanding musical styles. |
