Summary The Chappells quadrangle. South Carolina, is 35 km west of Columbia and covers the traditional Carolina Slate belt/ Charlotte belt boundary. It contains plutonic, layered metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic, deformed, and metamorphically altered rocks. These were deposited, intruded, tectonically transported, and some have unknown emplacement histories. The rocks were subjected to several periods of physical deformation (folding, thrusting, shearing, brittle faulting) and metamorphic alteration during the Paleozoic orogenies. The most intense folding deformation is ductile folding in the amphibole and biotite gneisses and the most intense shearing is in the interlayered felsic and mafic volcanic unit. A major structure crossing the center of the quadrangle from west to east dominates the tectonic history with three periods and directions of motion and explains the maximum temperature/pressure gradient of 58.33 °C/ 1 kb per km distance and a bouguer gravity gradient of 2.25 mgal/ km across it. A second structure along the quadrangle's western border may have associated deformations and histories. The most intense metamorphic alteration is in a garnet meta- gabbro with a metamorphic peak granulite grade mineral assemblage of 750 °C/ 10 kb.
