Summary The modem, low-gradient Waccamaw River, located in the southeastern NC Coastal Plain, is incised into a series of Pleistocene fluvial units and the underlying Cretaceous Peedee Formation. An ancient meandering channel system preserved in the antecedent floodplain reflects a larger scale paleofluvial system. The modem channel system has a meandering channel morphology characterized by two types of channels. Channel Type I has low-sinuosity meander bends, and is completely incised into the Peedee Formation. Channel Type II is sinuous and flows through unconsolidated fluvial alluvium. Forty vibracores were taken from the antecedent floodplain and along 15 cross-sectional profiles normal to the modem river. Seven lithofacies (LF) were defined from these vibracores. LF-1 is a Foraminifera-rich, sandy mud. LF-1, part of the Peedee Formation, was deposited on the mid- to outer continental shelf LF-2 is an organic-rich mud with thin, very fine-grained quartz sand laminations deposited in a floodplain environment. LF-3 through LF-7 represents a fining upward sequence deposited by a meandering channel morphology. Three Depositional Sequences (DS) make up the valley floor of the Waccamaw River watershed. DS-1 comprises floodplain deposits found stratigraphically below the fining upward sequences of the Waccamaw River. Radiocarbon dates from the organic-rich muds of DS-1 dated 32,580 and 39,320 years BP. Lithostratigraphic analyses in conjunction with radiocarbon dates on organic detritus reveal that DS-2 and DS-3 are two fining-upward depositional sequences. DS-2 produced the meander scars on the antecedent floodplain from 15,000 to 4000 years BP. DS-3 dates fi-om 4000 years BP to the present and represents the modem fluvial system that is incised into the Cretaceous Peedee Formation and DS-2. Incisement began around 4000 BP when a climatic fluctuation lowered oceanic surface temperatures decreasing the intensity and frequency of tropical storms responsible for the elevated precipitation and runoff between 13,000 and 4000 years BP.
