| Abstract | "In this artist's book, Chantal Ringuet and Eugénia Reznik evoke the feelings of uprooting, distress and urgency linked to the geopolitical conflict in Ukraine. Drawing on a rich poetic and visual language for elements that illustrate the tearing and then the reconstruction (such as holes, breakages and sutures), the artists ask themselves: what are the traces of destruction and uprooting, how do they evolve over time? At the crossroads of two artistic universes dominated by the plant world (plants, roots, branches, fibres) and textile worlds (lace, embroidery, geotextile) accentuated by the Ukrainian heritage and the Yiddish language, Le chant d'Odessa certainly calls for a cross-reading between the textual and the pictorial, but also a transversal reading between the wounds and the cries. Thus a new space is drawn, freed from the dark night, where the call of invisible birds causes the migration of words - and from where a song rises." --Author's website. |
