| Summary | This thesis is an exploration of the creation of the Gl Bill and its impact on higher education. The Gl Bill provided the means for more than two million veterans to attend college throughout the United States. Approximately, 3,000 of these veterans attended East Carolina Teachers College and changed the character and condition of the college. The purpose of this study is to find how veteran enrollment transformed this teachers college into a large liberal arts college. The thesis examines the purpose and creation of the Gl Bill, how it worked in North Carolina, the beginnings of ECTC, the challenges the administration faced, and the social changes encountered on campus. Since its foundation, ECTC served both male and female students but male enrollment remained low. Veteran enrollment after 1946 doubled the student body until male students outnumbered female students. In 1946 the college enrolled 1,442 students. By 1952, enrollment at ECTC more than doubled to 3,504. This increase was a direct result of the Gl Bill. Housing these male students was the most immediate challenge placed on the college since no male dorm existed. The college also raced to provide other facilities and enough faculty to handle the increase in classes. Socially, the new male student body intensified a charged campus in terms of dating, dancing, and administrative control. The veterans who enrolled at ECTC between 1945 and 1952 changed the college in essential ways. |
