Abstract In a Tyrolese village, Amina and Elvino are to be married. Lisa, a former love and hostess of the Inn, is jealous. Count Rodolfo returns to the village after a long absence and flirts with Amina the bride to-be. After retiring for the night at the Inn, Rodolfo is startled to find Amina sleepwalking into his room and lying on his sofa. The villagers finding out about Rodolfo's return to the village, come to pay their respects. They find Amina in the Count's bedroom and despite Amina's protests of innocence, Elvino denounces her. Rodolfo convinces the villagers that Amina is a sleepwalker but Elvino is not convinced. Just as Elvino starts to waver, Amina herself appears as if in a trance, walking over a frail bridge above a waterwheel. One false step would plunge her to her death. Peteously murmuring of her sorrow at losing Elvino, she alights safely and is wakened by the relieved villagers. Elvino is finally convinced of her innocenece, and takes her back into his arms.
