| Abstract | Those to whom Bach's passions are great music, and those to whom they are religious experiences, as well as singers, students, musicians and musicologists, welcomed this illuminating work when it first appeared in Great Britain. First published in 1957, the work has been newly enlarged and revised by the author for this edition. Ten new appendices amplify the text in light of recent scholarship; a new bibliography and preface have been added; and the list of passions available in modern editions has been newly revised. In addition, a new frontispiece depicting pages from a musical manuscript of Longaval completes the list of new features in this edition. |
| General note | This Dover edition, first published in 1970, is a revised and enlarged republication of the work originally published by the SCM Press, Ltd., London, in 1957. The Preface to the Dover Edition, the Appendices and the Bibliography are entirely new features of the present edition. |
