Summary The Pelzer 7.5' quadrangle, located in the Inner Piedmont of South Carolina, was geologically mapped at a 1:24,000 scale. The rocks were believed to have been emplaced as a nappe (Six Mile nappe) during the Taconic Orogeny. However, subsequent studies divided the quadrangle into Six Mile thrust sheet to the west and the Paris Mountain thrust sheet to the east. The rocks are sillimanite-grade metamorphic rocks including quartz-mica schists, granitic gneisses, biotite gneisses, homblende-plagioclase gneiss/amphibolites and gabbronorites. The metamorphic grade was defined by the presence of sillimanite in quart-mica schists and of metamorphic clinopyroxenes in amphibolites. The coexistence of sillimanite and granitic veins, seams, and pods predict a metamorphic temperature of 650-680°C and a pressure of 5.5- 6.5 kilobars (or approximately 20 km in depth). The rocks have been through three, possibly four, deformation events including the Taconic, Acadian, Alleghenian, and possibly Penobscottian orogenies. The deformation has created three primary fold styles which, from oldest to youngest, include: isoclinal folds, open synform and antiform folds, and chevron folds. The main penetrative foliation commonly strikes east of north with moderate dips to the east and west, and was produced either in the late Taconic or early Acadian. Several shear zones including one large zone (Grove Creek Shear Zone) trend northeast through the quadrangle. The Grove Creek Shear Zone, which can be up to 1 km across, indicates Alleghenian dextral movement defined by asymmetric augen and attenuated fold limbs. Some shear zones are truncated by other shear zones, indicting at least two episodes of shear. Thrust faults show northwest transport during reactivation of the Six Mile thrust sheet in the Alleghenian orogeny. This thrust separates rocks of similar lithologies, metamorphic grade and fold styles. Thus, it does not form a major lithologic and tectonic boundary, but is a minor fault within the Six Mile nappe.
