Sing, Volk der Christen, BR-CPEB F 6 (1768) is a pasticcio, with movements from two Easter cantatas (Was suchet ihr den Lebendigen bei den Toten, HoWV II.66; and Musste nicht Christus solches leiden, HoWV II.72) by Gottfried August Homilius, and from Bach's own Trauungs-Cantate (BR-CPEB F 65). Er ist nicht mehr, BR-CPEB F 17 (1770) is an arrangement of Georg Benda's Er ist nicht mehr, L 550, set to text by Balthasar Münter. Ist Christus nicht auferstanden, BR-CPEB F 8 (1771) is a pasticcio with music from Benda's cantata In Kedars bangen Hütten, L 534; a chorale harmonization borrowed from Bach's 1770 Easter Quartalstück; and a chorus, appearing twice in the work, from an unknown source. (An earlier version of BR-CPEB F 6, no 5, and Georg Benda's Dein ist der Sieg (the basis of an aria in BR-CPEB F 8) are included for comparison in Appendix A. Although the complete cantata is lost, the extant aria from Östermusik aus dem Messias von Händel (1777), arranged from Handel's Messiah and in German translation, is included in Appendix B.)--See pages xvi-xviii. |
