Introduction -- Roots in rhetoric -- Heinrich Schutz and the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte -- Analysis -- Appendix A: Text and translation of Die Stimm des Herren -- Appendix B: Text and translations of O Jesu, nomen dulce -- Appendix C: Text and translation of Was hast du verwirket. |
Summary |
That rhetoric played a significant role in the composition of seventeenth century music is virtually undisputed by music theorists. This thesis demonstrates the concept of musical rhetoric through the use of figures as they occur in three pieces from Heinrich Schutz's Kleine Geistliche Konzerte. Chapter one discusses the significance of rhetoric in 17th century music theory and its implications for the contemporary theory classroom. Chapter two includes an historical description of rhetorical process, terms, and techniques prior to and during the early 17th century (as they relate to music). Chapter three provides brief historical and biographical information on Heinrich Schutz and the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte. Chapter four is a detailed analysis of rhetorical-musical figures in three of the Konzerte: "Die Stimm des Herren," "Was hast du verwirket," and "O Jesu nomen dulce." |
