| Subject | A comprehensive aging study of vermilion snapper, Rhomboplites aurorubens. from the U.S. South Atlantic has been requested by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. A total of 1485 otoliths was collected from 1991- 1995 from the commercial and headboat fisheries from Morehead City, North Carolina through the Florida Keys. An additional 19 otoliths came from fishery-independent samples from the South Atlantic Bight for fish smaller than the legal size limit (10 inches total length; 254 millimeters). Observed ages ranged from 1 (202 mm mean TL) to 14 years (535 mm TL). The largest fish was 600 mm TL and was 13 years old. Rings on the otoliths were validated as annuli by marginal increment analysis and further substantiated by the increasing modal radius of each age ring corresponding to the increasing modal size of the fish at age. The weight- length relationship is described by the equation: W = 9.55x10⁻⁹ (L)3.04, where W = whole weight in kilograms and L = total length in mm. Growth patterns of vermilion snapper caught in two areas (the Carolinas versus Florida) and by the two fisheries did not show any measurable differences. Therefore, one von Bertalanffy equation was estimated using the inverse weighted back-calculated lengths at the last annulus. The equation is = 670(1-e-0.117(t+0613)). This growth equation is similar to the one estimated by Grimes (1978), though the age structures used in the two studies are different. |
