The letters document the major events in their lives: Robert's short-lived engagement to Ernestine von Fricken, his courtship of Clara, Friedrich Wieck's vehement opposition, and Clara and Robert's secret plans for marriage. The letters comment on their encounters with Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin, Felix Mendelssohn, Ignaz Moscheles and others. They also describe Clara's triumphant concert tour of Austria and Robert's attempt to establish himself and his journal in Vienna. The second volume contains letters written in 1839, documenting the major events of that year: Clara's concert tour and stay in Paris, Friedrich Wieck's continued vehement opposition to Robert's courtship of his daughter, Clara and Robert's legal action to obtain the court's consent for their marriage, Clara's reunion and stay with her mother in Berlin, and the death of Robert's brother Eduard. The third volume contains letters written between January 1840 and March 1851. The letters preceding the couple's wedding in September 1840 document the last phase of Robert's lawsuit against Friedrich Wieck aimed at obtaining permission to marry. They also include comments on Robert's fondness for lieder and his close friendship with Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Liszt. The letters written when Clara went on tour without her husband, for instance to Copenhagen in 1842, revolve around news about her concerts and her reactions to such famous men as Hans Christian Andersen and Niels Gade. The better part of the letters was written by Clara--Robert was so occupied with his work that his letters are frequently quite brief. The letters in this volume offer a fresh look at a marriage that earlier biographers have described as problematic. Such a view is not borne out by the correspondence in this volume.;
