| Abstract | In this revised edition the opportunity has been taken to make many additions and corrections in the light of new information which has come to hand in the intervening years. The book is not a conventional biography: more an in-depth appreciation of a much loved man who as a composer (of music, and of words-about-music), teacher and friend to musicians of all kinds and on all levels, was one of the most vital forces for good in 20th-century English music. Every aspect of this long and productive life is covered here, including: (i) a portrait of the nature of the man, in an attempt to understand why he wrote the kind of music he did, with some account of that music; (ii) an exhaustive history of Hymnus Paradisi, Howells' acknowledged masterpiece; (iii) tributes from friends, pupils and colleagues, and many previously unpublished letters from celebrities like Parry, Vaughan Williams and Walter de la Mare; (iv) a copious selection of Howells' own articles, speeches, lectures and broadcasts, not excerpted but complete; (v) all Howells' known commentaries on his works, with extensive documentation from other sources. Paul Andrews contributes a complete work-list, selective bibliography and discography, and many interesting photographs are reproduced for the first time. |
