| Abstract | The appearance of this book coincides with a remarkable revival of interest in old musical instruments which is no longer confined to a few private enthusiasts. It deals with the keyboard instruments (excluding the organ) which preceded the pianoforte, i.e. the clavichord, virginal, spinet, and harpsichord, and with the early history of the pianoforte up to the year 1820. The work, which is a reprint of the scarce, original edition, published in 1930, is illustrated with more than sixty plates taken from illuminated MSS, prints, etc., as well as from the finest examples of the instruments themselves in museums and private collections throughout Europe and America. In addition there is a list giving the names and working dates of over two hundred makes of keyboard instruments, which should be invaluable to owners and collectors. |
