| Summary | Logbook, 1853-1854, kept by seaman Henry E. Day onboard the Bark LEO. Capt. William A. Miller commanded this voyage from New York to Marseille, Malaga and Gilbraltar. Day describes seafaring life; including a musical session, and harbour life. The LEO also carried 5 passengers from Gibraltar to New York; Logbook, 1853, kept by seaman Henry E. Day onboard the FRANCIS PALMER, for a trans-Atlantic trading voyage. The FRANCIS PALMER was successively commanded by four Captains; Smith, Nathaniel Thompson, Chas. L. Blake, and finally the first mate. Each retired their position on account of bad health. Day describes life on board; desertions, and lingering sickness among the captain and crew, as well as activities in the ports of Machais, Maine, Sierra Leone, Marseille, and Gibraltar; Logbook, 1857, kept by seaman Henry E. Day onboard the GEM OF THE SEAS, for a trans-Atlantic trading voyage, William A. Miller master. Day describes life on board; including altercations among the crew, and life on shore in Cadiz; a murder, and a bull fight. |
