| Summary | Journals and observations on Sable Island, Nova Scotia by James R. Morris, superintendent of the island from 1801-1809. Morris was sent on behalf of the House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia to establish a permanent settlement and life-saving station there, a place known for many shipwrecks. Morris' volume of remarks and observations written upon his arrival describe the livestock, topography, and other physical aspects of the land, as well as the flag-staff, cannon and plans for a lighthouse. The journals, 6 October 1801 -28 May 1802 and 1 August 1802 - 1 June 1804, note the establishment of a settlement on the island; sightings and daily activities; survival; shipwrecks, including those of the HANNAH and ELIZA, captained by William Burrowes, the brig HARRIOT, and the schooner MARTHA. (cont.) Also, comments on rescue efforts and the repair and building of ships. In addition, extracts from the Journal and Proceedings of the House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, with copies of letters of Lieutenant-Governor John Wentworth, one being instructions to Morris prior to his taking command of the island (1801). |
