Summary Diary kept by William Mason, a crew member on the iron screw troopship HMS MEGAERA (1849), 27 April to 2 October 1871. The entries cover the period during which the MEGAERA was beached as unseaworthy on St Paul's Island in the Indian Ocean. The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co passenger liner MALACCA (1866), which was chartered by the British Government to rescue the stranded survivors, reached Sydney on 2 October.
