Abstract In the light of Rachmaninov's popularity some kind of survey of his life and works seems absolutely necessary. This book has been written in the hope that it may prove itself to be a balanced, and not uncritical, survey of the compositions of a composer who has perhaps been more widely misunderstood than almost any other of his generation. Yet Rachmaninov's music has probably suffered much more from the wild claims of some of its enthusiasts than from the severest critical judgments, although it is again very simple in his case to misjudge the music because one mistakes the motive behind it.
