Abstract When Ralph Vaughan Williams died in 1958 at the age of 86, he had completed nine symphonies, composed over a period of almost half a century. Until recently, these works have been neglected in this country in favor of his lighter works. Believing that the symphonies represent a major contribution to the symphonic tradition, the author traces the historical background from which they emerged and presents an intensive analysis of each of them, concluding with an evaluation of Ralph Vaughan Williams' unique musical style. The work, which contains 240 musical examples, is addressed to the student and teacher of music. Appendixes include a discussion of the educational implications of this study and tables of measure references illustrating specific areas of musical style.
