| Abstract | Paul A. Pisk was internationally known as a musicologist, composer, teacher, and performer. The broad scope of subjects in this book reflects his wide interests and accomplishments. The essays range from the scholarly to the delightfully readable, from detailed analysis to philosophical discussions. The chronological and geographical compass of both subject matter and writers is equally great. Contributors include young doctoral students who did much of their work under the tutelage of Dr. Pisk, colleagues at the University of Texas and Washington University, and musicologists of repute from the United States and Europe. Personal letters from Schoenberg and Berg to Dr. Pisk, who had known these men well during his youth in Vienna, bring the reader a feeling of almost belonging to the inner circle of these men now recognized among the greats in twentieth century music. The letters are but one of the twenty-six varied contributions published in the book. The many subjects found here cannot fail to attract the serious reader and especially those with musical interests and curiosity. |
