| Abstract | This book contains the bulk of the late R. Vaughan Williams's writings on music. The topics of the papers range from Bach to Holst, and all alike are illuminated by Dr. Vaughan Williams's direct and at times outspoken comments. The most important study, of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, has not hitherto been published; it is also the longest, and in it the author shows in detail exactly why he considers that this work, by a composer with whom he is in general out of sympathy, is one of the very greatest of all compositions. |
