Abstract |
This book, the first in English on Albert Roussel, supplies an urgent need. It deals with the life and work of the modern French composer who, after Debussy, Ravel and Faure, has achieved the greatest prominence in recent years. Since his death, in 1937, Roussel's fame has grown steadily beyond the confines of his native land. Such works as the Third and Fourth Symphonies and "Le Festin de l'Araignee" are fast establishing themselves in the permanent repertoire of famous orchestras. Concert and radio audiences are becoming increasingly familiar with this music, and a book intended for the interest and guidance of such a public would seem to be assured of a wide welcome. The author was a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music and needs no introduction as a composer. His practical experience as teacher and creative artist qualified him admirably to deal with his subject, bringing a discerning critical faculty to bear on his general enthusiasm for this music. |
