General note"'Freaks of fortune' is the fourth of the serial stories published in 'Our boys and girls.' It was written in response to a great number of calls for a sequel to 'The starry flag.'"--Preface, p. 5, signed by William T. Adams, and dated at Harrison Square, Mass., July 27, 1868. The title "Freaks of fortune" was apparently later designated the second item in the series.
