The distribution of Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera in Sandy Creek-Swift Creek, North Carolina / by Lannis E. Smith, Jr.

Summary The objectives of this study were to determine distribution of Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera nymphs and Trichoptera larvae in Sandy Creek-Swift Creek, North Carolina and to determine the relationships of their distribution to chemical and physical parameters from October 1991 to July 1992. These parameters included water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, habitat substrate type, depth of water, width of stream, and current velocity. Aquatic insects were collected and parameter data recorded at each station. Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera were determined to be habitat specific with all orders found in microhabitats characteristic of their respective physiological, trophic, and behavior characteristics. Significant differences in distribution were detected between all stations, but not between Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions. The differences between stations were determined to be based upon percentage sand, current velocity, and water depth at each sample location. Other parameters measured did not vary and therefore could not be correlated to distributional differences.
