| Summary | The oviduct of most vertebrate species, including the red-spotted newt (Notophthahmis viridescens), secretes glycoprotein macromolecules which contribute to fertilization and early embryo development. Regulation of both synthesis and release of these glycoproteins depends on the ovarian estrogens and progesterone. The present study uses lectin histochemistry to examine the appearance and distribution of oviductal glycoproteins in ovariectomized newts treated with estrogen and progesterone, either alone or in combination. By two weeks post-ovariectony, the oviductal epithelium had atrophied and deciliated; secretory cells were weakly PAS positive. Average wet weight of oviducts from controls was less than the group treated with a combination of estrogen and progesterone although this difference was not statistically significant. HRP-lectin histochemistry revealed specific sugars in the oviduct of the newt which varied with the hormonal treatment employed. Sections of oviducts from the group treated with the combination of estrogen and progesterone produced the most intense staining, ciliated cells and well developed oviductal morphology. |
