| Abstract | In the rich panoply of black urban popular music traditions in South Africa, the 'jazzing' tradition lays claim to a special place. A music style whose range of idioms has been a repository for some of the country's finest creative energies, the jazzing style's makers can claim to be the bearers of one of South Africa's proudest cultural traditions. This book focuses on the founding years of the black jazzing subculture, the era in which it was inventing, developing and perfecting styles of music, musical performance and dance. It tells of Peter Rezant, 'Zuloboy' Cele, The Jazz Revellers, The Merry Blackbirds and the Pitch Black Follies--only some of the outstanding musicians who held the country's urban black population in thrall during the early decades of this century. The book also describes the social context which gave rise to this music. Illustrated with rare photographs of the period, this book is accompanied by a tape cassette of 25 tracks recorded between 1930 and 1945. A fascinating investigation into a largely forgotten musical tradition, this book is a must for those interested in exploring South Africa's musical and cultural past. |
