| Abstract | Playwright and artistic director George C. Wolfe was born on September 23, 1954 in Frankfort, Kentucky. As a student at Pomona College in Claremont, California, Wolfe wrote and directed his first plays, Up for Grabs and Block Party. After graduating in 1976, Wolfe completed a postgraduate artist residency at Pomona College, staging the first production of Tribal Rites at the Inner City Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Wolfe moved to New York City, where he received his M.F.A. degree from New York University in 1983. New York Shakespeare Festival founder Joseph Papp named Wolfe a resident director after Wolfe's play The Colored Museum garnered national attention. Wolfe won his first Obie award for the New York production of Spunk and made his Broadway debut with Jelly's Last Jam. He directed the Broadway premiere of Angels in America and was named producer of the New York Shakespeare Festival, producing ten seasons. |
