He received his B.S. degree in urban planning from Iowa State University in 1996, and his M.A. degree in fine arts and religious studies from the University of Cape Town in 1998. He later returned to Iowa State University and obtained his M.S. degree in urban planning, ceramics and religious studies in 2006. That same year, Gates established Dorchester Projects, a cultural rehabilitation project on Chicago's South Side. In 2011, he was named the director of Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago, and in 2014, was appointed as a professor in the department of visual arts. As an artist, Gates has been represented by White Cube of London, England. He has exhibited his artwork and performed at numerous cultural institutions, and served as a Loeb fellow at Harvard University. Gates also founded The Rebuild Foundation.;
