Weems graduated in 1981 from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia with her B.F.A. degree, and received her M.F.A. degree in photography from the University of California, San Diego in 1984. From 1984 to 1987, she participated in the graduate program in folklore at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1984, Weems completed her first series of photographs, text, and spoken word entitled, Family Pictures and Stories, the first of many collections. She also produced many artistic video projects, including Coming Up for Air in 2004. Weems was represented by the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major national and international museums. She taught at Harvard University, Syracuse University and the University of Pennsylvania, and was awarded the MacArthur "Genius" Grant in 2013.;
