Abstract Physicist and professor Demetrius D. Venable was born in 1947 in Powhatan, Virginia. Venable received his B.S. degree in physics from Virginia State College in 1970. He earned his M.S. degree and Ph.D. degree in physics from American University in 1972 and 1974, respectively. Venable was then hired by IBM-East Fishkill as a senior associate engineer. He served as an assistant professor of physics at Saint Paul's College before joining Hampton University, where he was instrumental in the founding of the doctorate program in physics. Venable held numerous positions at Hampton, eventually becoming executive vice president and provost in 1994. When he moved to Howard University in 1995, he was named the chairman of the department of physics and astronomy, a post that he held until 2007. Venable was instrumental in establishing the Howard University Beltsville Research Campus and the Raman Lidar Program. His awards include the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's Distinguished Public Service Medal.
