Abstract Lawyer James L. Winston was born on August 24, 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Winston graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1965. He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with his B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1969. Three years later, Winston earned his J.D. degree from the Harvard Law School. He worked for the LeBoeuf, Lamb, Leiby and MacRae law firm before serving as associate counsel for the Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1978, Winston served as a legal assistant to Federal Communications Commissioner Robert F. Lee. He was then hired as an associate attorney by the Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen law firm. Winston helped to establish the Rubin, Winston, Diercks, Harris & Cooke, LLP firm in 1981. A year later, Winston was appointed executive director and general counsel for the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, Inc.
