A. degree in political science from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1965; and his M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School in 1971. He began his career with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York City. In 1980, he was promoted to chief operating officer of Goldman's corporate finance department of the investment banking division. He left Goldman in 1988 to found Granite Broadcasting Corporation. As Chairman and CEO, Cornwell acquired more than fifteen television stations, becoming, at one time, one of the 25 largest television station groups in the U. S. and the largest television broadcast company controlled by an African American. From 1991-2006, Granite was listed on NASDAQ. He served also on the board of directors of Avon Products, Pfizer, American International Group and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York.;
