After graduating from Wilkinson High School in 1952, he enrolled at Bradley University where he studied chemistry. In 1956, he earned his B.S. degree in chemistry and, in 1961, earned his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from Indiana University. Following graduation, Dorman accepted a research chemist position at Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan. He became known for his research in agricultural chemistry and with polypeptides. His work in agricultural chemistry led to new findings that lessened agricultural damage to the environment caused by chemicals like herbicides and insect repellant. His studies of polypeptides improved medical uses for slowing down blood clotting. Dorman was named Inventor of the Year by Dow Chemical Company in 1983, and has also been credited with over twenty inventions and patents in organic chemistry and biomaterials.;
