520 a| Physicist and military officer James Stith was born on July 17, 1941 in Alberta, Virginia to Ruth Stith. Stith graduated from Virginia State College with his B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics. After working for the Radio Corporation of America, Stith returned to school obtaining his D.Ed. degree in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1972. Stith served in the U.S. Army for more than two decades, mostly as professor of physics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, becoming the first tenured African American professor. He taught at Ohio State University from 1993 to 1998. From 1998 to 2008, he served as Vice President at the American Institute of Physics. He wrote several journal articles detailing the under-representation of African Americans in the hard sciences in higher education. Married to Alberta Hill, they parented three daughters.;
