Abstract |
Baritone vocalist Otis Clayborn Williams was born on October 30, 1941 in Texarkana, Texas. In 1955, Williams attended Detroit's Northwestern High School and graduated in 1958. As an adolescent, he became interested in music and was instrumental in the founding of the R&B singing groups Otis Williams and The Siberians, The El Domingoes and The Distants. In 1961, he became one of original five members of The Temptations when the group was signed by Berry Gordy to Motown Records. Williams and The Temptations began performing at local clubs in Detroit, as well as singing backup for various Motown acts. The group earned commercial success by releasing their album Dream Come True in 1962. Williams went on to become the longest tenured member of The Temptations and was the co-author of the novel that became a television miniseries entitled The Temptations. |
