Abstract Lawyer Gary Gayton was born on February 25, 1933, in Seattle, Washington. In 1955, Gayton graduated from the University of Washington with his B.A. degree in political science. After serving honorably for two years in the U.S. Army, Gayton earned his L.L.B. degree from Gonzaga University, and was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy to the post of assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington. In 1965, Gayton formed the law firm of Stern, Gayton, Neubauer & Brucker. He became special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Brock Adams in 1977. He then served as the acting and deputy administrator of the U.S. Urban Mass Transportation Administration. Gayton returned to Seattle in 1980, as counsel for the firm of Diamond & Sylvester. In 1985, Gayton became an investment banker, working as senior vice president for Siebert, Brandford, Shank & Company, the largest minority and female bond-underwriting firm in the nation.
