Williams attended The American University, where he earned his B.A. degree in film production and literature. He furthered his education by earning a certificate in electronics from the University of Sound Arts in 1979. Williams worked as an audio engineer for WRC/NBC-TV from 1973 to 1975 and again between 1977 and 1978. In 1978, he was hired by WMAL/ABC Radio as an engineer and editor. In 1990, Williams won an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Sound for Glory and won another Academy Award for his contribution as a sound mixer for Dances With Wolves in 1991. Williams' other film and television credits include Field of Dreams, Boomerang, 12 Angry Men, The Temptations, Training Day and The Eyes on the Prize documentaries. Williams also worked as an associate professor at Howard University, UCLA and USC.;
