She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in 1964 with her B.A. degree in history. She earned her M.A. degree in history from the University of Massachusetts and her Ph.D. from Atlanta University. From 1972 to 1994, Yancy served as professor of history, technology, and society and management at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She became the first African American to be tenured as a full professor at the institution. She also served as Associate Director of the School of Social Sciences. In 1994, Yancy was named the first female president of Johnson C. Smith University. As president, Yancy doubled the University endowment to $57 million and transformed Johnson C. Smith into a high-tech institution.;
