520 a| Cardiac surgeon Levi Watkins, Jr. was born on June 13, 1944 in Parsons, Kansas. His mother was a teacher; his father President of Alabama State University. Graduating in 1966 from Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in biology, he became the first black to graduate from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. From 1971 to 1973, Watkins was the first black general surgery resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He conducted cardiac research at the Harvard Medical School of Physiology from 1973 to 1975. Promoted to the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1977, Watkins performed the world's first human implantation of the automatic defibrillator in 1980. Watkins became full professor of Cardiac Surgery and Dean for Postdoctoral Programs. He was Professor of Surgery and Associate Dean of the School of Medicine until 2013. Watkins received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to science. He passed away April 11, 2015.;
