520 a| Civil rights activist and community leader Ozell Sutton was born on a cotton plantation in Gould, Arkansas on December 13, 1925. In 1944, Sutton was among the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. As the Director of the Arkansas Council on Human Relations, he was part of the group that created the Community Relations Service. He was given responsibility for the civil rights and equal opportunity groups that combined in 1964 to become the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Sutton was in the Lorraine Hotel room next door to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when King was assassinated in 1968. In 1972, he directed the Justice Department's Community Relations Service in the conflict-prone southeast region, where he was responsible for the racial and ethnic conflict prevention and resolution efforts. Sutton passed away on December 19, 2015.;
