| Abstract |
Economist, investment executive, and university president Clifton Reginald Wharton, Jr. was born on September 13, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts. Being the son of a career diplomat, Wharton spent his early childhood in the Canary Islands, Spain. In 1943, Wharton received his diploma from Boston Latin School and entered Harvard University, where he received his B.A. degree in history in 1947. He received his M.A. degree in international affairs from John Hopkins University in 1948, his M.A. degree in 1956 and his Ph.D. in 1958 in economics from the University of Chicago. Wharton became the first African American president of Michigan State University. He, then, headed the largest university system in the nation, the State University of New York. In 1987, he became one of the first African American CEOs of TIAA-CREF, a major Fortune 500 company. Wharton resided in New York City with his wife and two sons, Bruce and Clifton III. |
