520 a| Cultural preservationist Dorothy Jenkins Fields was born on December 31, 1942, in Miami, Florida. Fields received her B.F.A. in art from Spelman College in 1964. She then worked as a librarian where she learned that written materials on African Americans in Miami did not exist. She was then hired as a historian with the American Association of University Women. In 1977, Fields received a certificate from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in Archives Administration and Historic Preservation. Later, at The Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio, she earned her Ph.D. in 20th century African-American history, historic preservation, and public history. She then founded The Black Archives, History & Research Foundation of South Florida. Fields has been successful in the restoration of the landmark Lyric Theater located in Miami's historic African American community of Overtown. Fields has served as a member of the advisory board for the Haitian Heritage Museum, and a board member for the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami.;
