Abstract |
Politician and lawyer Algernon Johnson Cooper, Jr. was born on May 30, 1944, in Mobile, Alabama. Cooper attended the Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, Illinois, and graduated in 1962. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Notre Dame; and his J. D. degree from New York University Law School. While attending law school, Cooper founded the National Black Law Students Association. After earning his law degree and working on Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign, Cooper moved to Alabama and became a civil rights lawyer and litigator. In 1972, Cooper was elected mayor and chief executive officer of Prichard, Alabama. He was the first African American to defeat a white incumbent in the state of Alabama. As mayor, he founded and served as the first president of the National Conference of Black Mayors. In 1988, Cooper re-entered private practice when he joined the firm of Ginsburg, Feldman, and Bress, Chartered. |
