Attending Edwards Elementary School and graduating from Douglass High School, Ferguson earned her B.S. degree in journalism from Indiana University in 1971. Starting her career as a television reporter at WLWI-TV in Indianapolis, she joined Chicago's WBBM-TV becoming the first African American woman to work as an investigative reporter in the city. In 1980, she was hired as a network news correspondent for CBS News in New York City and Atlanta. In 1987, Ferguson joined the UNIT 5 investigative team at Chicago's WMAQ-TV. Ferguson reported on many issues including the strip searches of women of color at Chicago's O'Hare Airport and sexual harassment at Chicago's Ford Motor Plant. She received many journalism honors, including seven Emmys and the Associated Press Award for Best Investigative Reporting. In 2008, she retired from investigative journalism at WMAQ-TV.;
